Junior High |
Head Coach – Jason Carpenter Jason is a 1996 graduate from
Selinsgrove High School.
He began wrestling in third grade.
Jason worked through the elementary and junior high
wrestling programs at Selinsgrove and eventually high school
wrestling at the 275 weight class.
Under the instruction of Todd Myers and George
Hummel, Jason achieved the status of district champion in
1995 and 1996 and many other tournaments throughout his
junior and senior years.
From high school he went on to Clarion University
where he played football.
Jason later transferred to Lock Haven University and
graduated in 2000 with a BA in Sociology.
He, then, became a PIAA wrestling official for six
years. Jason
says “I want to take what I’ve learned from wrestling and
teach kids the discipline it takes to become a quality
wrestler.”

Assistant Coach - Jerry Bastian Coach Jerry Bastian has been a
Seals elementary wrestling coach for the past seven
seasons. He served previously as the head coach for the
K-2 level for two seasons and has served as the head
coach for the K-6 program for the last four. He has
previous coaching experience as an assistant at Milton
Area High School. During the past several seasons the
Seals program grew into a highly successful one that has
finished first or second in the Susquehanna Valley
Elementary Wrestling League events for the past three
seasons. Seals wrestlers have qualified for and placed
in the PJW State Tournament as well as the MAWA Eastern
National tournament. They have also achieved success in
several other high caliber tournaments. |
Assistant Coach - Bill Bechtel
Bill was a four year starter for Selinsgrove’s legendary
wrestling coach Dick Smoker. He continued his wrestling
career at Susquehanna University where he again was a
four year starter. He became the Crusaders first
undefeated wrestler in dual meets. His dream was to
return to Selinsgrove High School and give back to the
program that gave him so much. The dream came true when
he was hired to teach Environmental Science In the fall
of 1971.
Bill’s coaching career began as the assistant junior
high coach that same year. The next year he was hired as
the head junior high coach and stayed in that position
for 9 years. He then moved up to the assistant varsity
position and became the varsity coach when Coach Smoker
became ill. He stayed in that position for 10 years.
After taking 15 years off, he returned to the junior
high where he is now the assistant coach. This is his
eighth year in that position.

Volunteer Assistant Coach - Mike Gaugler Mike
is a 1993 graduate of Selinsgrove. While at
Selinsgrove, Mike was a three-time qualifier for the
Northeast Regional tournament. He then went on to wrestle 2
years at the University of Pennsylvania. Mike
wrestled his final 2 years at Messiah College and
finished his wrestling career as a D-III National
Tournament qualifier. After serving in various
capacities in the elementary wrestling program for the
past 9 years, Mike will serve at the Junior High and
Varsity levels. Mike believes the sport of
wrestling is an excellent tool to train strong,
well-rounded men and he would like to pass those lessons
on to another generation of Selinsgrove wrestlers. |
